Bad Service, Bad Drinks!

Have you ever been to Salt Lake City? I was just there last week for four days attending a conference. The city was nice enough...clean, nice people (alot of homeless in the downtown area) but I didn't get decent service in a restaurant the entire time I was there and they can't make a decent drink! I'm not a beer kind of girl (I just haven't aquired a taste for it) so its all fruity, girlie drinks for me (margarita, the fruity martinis, etc). The first night I was there I tried to order a strawberry mojito at a bar - it was on their drink menu and looked pretty good. I had eaten at the hotel earlier and was just out with a few people from the conference. Anyway, we waited in the bar for 10 minutes before I stopped a waitress and asked how exactly one got served. She said she could help us and when I ordered my drink she told me that I would have to order food to get the drink I wanted. I explained to her that I wasn't hungry but she insisted that because they were serving food, I had to order something to eat in order to get a drink. I asked her if there was anywhere in the bar where I could get a drink without eating and she pointed to one area but explained that I could only get beer without eating. In order to get the drink I wanted, I had to order food but any food item would do. She suggested I order chips. I left!

It turns out that this weird rule wasn't a one establishment rule, it is either a city or a state law. One guy at the conference found a place that got around the law by allowing its customers to order one chicken wing for fifty cents and then they can order as many drinks as they wanted. Several establishments are "private clubs" where you pay the equivalent of a cover charge to become a temporary member and then you can order drinks. One place I went charged one person $17.00 to become a year long member, then he got a t-shirt or hat (which would have cost $16.00) for free. Then he could "sponsor" as many of his friends as he would like. After that we could eat or drink, etc but no one was required to order food. STRANGE!

Other then being out of town, not much has been happening around here. I think Alyssa is getting another tooth. We have had a couple sleepless nights. But I guess she makes up for not sleeping at home at night by crashing at school. This picture is Alyssa and her friend Sofi on a buggy ride -- obviously an exhausting outing!

Katelyn is doing great. She went to the doctor last week for her four year check up. Mike had to take her since I was out of town. She weighed in at 40 pounds and 42 inches. That means its time to start researching booster seats! She still fits in her current car seat that is in the car, but we don't have two in the truck, so it would be nice to get a booster for her. That way, both girls can go in either vehicle without moving car seats around. Yes, I'm actually excited about this (how dull is my life?). Anyway, she also had to get four shots and she made sure to tell me how unhappy she was about that. She also told her daddy -- I guess he got an ear full. She didn't let it drop either, she was still talking about her shots when I got home four days later! ~ Well, thats all I can think of to post, although I'm sure more has happened over the last two weeks, I'm too tired to figure it out. I'm going to bed and keeping my fingers crossed that Alyssa sleeps through the night tonight!

I think I would have just stopped somewhere, bought a bottle and taken it back to my hotel..
It's strange that the waitress didn't tell you it was a law, instead of just insisting you had to buy food..
